Weld Commissioner recognized for work on I-25

Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer was one of three local leaders honored during the Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner held last week. Kirkmeyer, along with Larimer County Commissioner Tom Donnelly and Fort Collins Mayor Pro Tem Gerry Horak, were each presented with an award for their leadership on the I-25 improvement efforts.

“Dozens and dozens of people have contributed to this effort,” said Fort Collins Area Chamber President and CEO David May. “But there is a short list of people who rise above the rest.” May went on to acknowledge the work of former Region 4 CDOT Director Johnny Olson, Sandra Solin of Capitol Solutions, and Colorado Transportation Commission representative Kathy Gilliland. “But tonight, we wanted to put the spotlight on three elected officials,” May said of Kirkmeyer, Donnelly and Horak.

“All three (Kirkmeyer, Donnelly and Horak) have testified, lobbied legislators, rallied support, and provided strategic leadership on I-25,” May explained. May continued to highlight the work of the North I-25 Coalition, founded by Kirkmeyer, which brought multiple government agencies together for the sole purpose of finding ways to improve the condition of the corridor.

Transportation Commissioner Kathy Gilliland also shared comments, “Commissioners Donnelly, Kirkmeyer and Mayor Pro-Tem Horak deserve to be recognized for their outstanding contribution to this significant and innovative collaboration that will serve all who travel I-25 now and in the future.”
“I’m very appreciative of the recognition,” said Kirkmeyer. “And as David said, a lot of people came together to make these improvements a reality. It is amazing what can happen with people come together and find solutions to the issues they face. North I-25 is the backbone of northern Colorado – not just for travelers but for the shipment of goods within and out of our state. It is crucial to the future and the success of the entire northern Front Range.”

“It has been one of the most successful regional collaborations of our time,” said May.
