Planning Commission to review zoning updates

For the first time since 1981, the Weld County Department of Planning Services, the Planning Commission, and Board of County Commissioners are reviewing and updating almost all of the county’s zoning regulations listed in chapter 23 of the Weld County Code.

The Planning Commission will review the proposed changes and make a formal recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners at its meeting on Tuesday, March 19 at 12:30 p.m. The public is welcome to review the changes and provide public comment at both the Planning Commission meeting and at future BOCC meetings.

For more information on the proposed changes, visit https://www.weldgov.com/departments/planning_and_zoning/long-range_planning.

The updates involve all 13 zoning districts in Weld County, but they focus heavily on identifying the types of facilities, activities, and uses that belong in the county’s vast agricultural zone. Proposed changes will affect land in unincorporated Weld County only. Some of the proposed updates include:

  • Restricting certain industrial uses from occurring in the ag zone, especially within subdivisions, while promoting more agriculture related uses.
  • Shifting the permitting process for many ag related uses from a Use Special Review (USR) process to a more administrative process facilitated by the Department of Planning Services.
  • Changing whether a use is allowed in the ag zone based on whether property is in a subdivision or historic townsite.

In addition to providing public comment at the Planning Commission meeting, comments can also be submitted in writing to Jim Flesher, Weld County Long-Range Planner, at jflesher@weldgov.com or they can also be mailed to him at 1555 North 17th Ave, Greeley, CO 80631.

Opportunities for public comment:

Planning Commission Meeting - Tuesday, March 19 at 12:30 p.m. in the Hearing Room of the Weld County Administration Building, located at 1150 O Street in Greeley.

Comments can also be submitted in writing to Jim Flesher, Weld County Long-Range Planner, at jflesher@weldgov.com. Comments can also be mailed to Jim Flesher at 1555 North 17th Ave., Greeley, CO. 80631
