CCI names Kirkmeyer Commissioner of the Year

During the 2019 Colorado Counties, Inc. (CCI) Dinner and Awards ceremony December 3, Weld County Commissioner Chair Barbara Kirkmeyer was honored with the Commissioner of the Year Award.

In a nomination letter sent by fellow commissioners, Commissioner Kirkmeyer was commended for the countless hours she worked with the Child Welfare Allocation Committee to develop an allocation formula that allowed for adequate funding of additional full-time child welfare workers. She also initiated the Families First Preservation Services Act work group, which developed a roadmap for counties and the state to implement changes required by a new federal law and regulations.

In addition to human services, Kirkmeyer made a huge impact statewide in 2019 with her determination to fight for local control regarding oil and gas development under Senate Bill 181. She assisted in the drafting and passage of amendments to not only preserve Weld County’s local control but also enhance it.

She’s been an integral part of the Statewide Transportation Advisory Committee and has helped increase dollars for transportation infrastructure. She’s even worked with Executive Director Dean Williams at the Colorado Department of Corrections to implement a program that lowers the likelihood of inmates reoffending.

“I am honored to be named the Commissioner of the Year,” said Barbara Kirkmeyer, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “I am extremely passionate about county government. Working on these projects and serving on various committees is helping better my county and other counties in Colorado.”

Nominations for the award are submitted from counties across the state. CCI based its final selection on the commissioner’s participation in CCI committees, taskforces or district caucuses as well as the commissioner’s activities in his/her county and outside agencies that go above and beyond the call of duty.

This is the fourth award Kirkmeyer has received from CCI. She also received the Commissioner of the Year Award in 1997, the CCI Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and Freshman Commissioner of the Year in 1993.
