The Road and Bridge Construction Division plays a key role in the construction and maintenance of bridges and roads within Weld County. The support team for the Road and Bridge Construction Division is comprised of full-time and seasonal employees, providing the following services:
Weld County currently maintains 449 bridges, approximately two-thirds of which are classified as major, or having a span of twenty feet or more. Every two years, Weld County works with a contractor to evaluate all of the major bridges in the County in order to plan for long-term improvements. Minor bridges (less than 20’) are inspected on a regular basis by County staff.
The two most common methods for evaluating bridge conditions are Sufficiency Rating and Classification. These measures assist staff in determining if the bridge is structurally deficient, functionally obsolete or in need of immediate repairs. Sufficiency ratings are calculated based on a 0-100 scale that compares the existing bridge or culvert to a new bridge designed to current engineering standards.
The road construction crew upgrades approximately 20 miles of road per year. A portion of these roads are gravel roads that are reconstructed and turned into a paved road; while some of these roads are currently paved that need upgrades to address various conditions.
Some of the conditions that effect roads can be base failure do to the age of the road or the increase in traffic counts, practically if there is an increase in truck traffic.
The construction crew has been innovative in using technology, like GPS systems installed on motor graders, to increase productivity and cut down on the amount of surveying that is done in historical construction practices.
Along with the technical advances in the industry, Weld County has implemented newer construction practices like Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) on present asphalt roads that are rebuilt and Cement Treated Base on gravel roads that are converted to paved roads.
