Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program)

Health First Colorado is free or low cost public health insurance for Coloradans who qualify. Medicaid can cover doctor visits, emergency care, preventative care such as screenings and immunizations, and other procedures and treatments.

The program is funded jointly by a federal-state partnership and is administered by the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

Eligibility

Doctor with childEligibility for Health First Colorado and CHP+ depends upon family size, income and the age of the applicant. Gross income and family size are used in determining eligibility. Family income must be less than the need standard. The unborn child is considered a part of the household. Income can be verified for the current or preceding month depending upon the date of application. 

There is no resource (asset) limit for Health First Colorado. 

Who is eligible?

  • Financially qualified children ages 0-18 and parents with dependent children

  • Adults, Parents, and Caretakers whose income is at or below 133% of the Federal Poverty Level

  • Pregnant women whose family income is at or below 195% of the Federal Poverty Level

Retroactive Health First Colorado Benefits

Health First Colorado benefits may be backdated up to 90-days from the date of application. Income must be verified for the calendar month, which includes the date of service within the backdated 90-day period.
