Environmental Health
The Environmental Health Services (EHS) Division of the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment is responsible for performing inspections, investigations, and evaluations to ensure compliance with local ordinances and state statutes to preserve and perpetuate a healthy environment.
The EHS Division's primary mission is to protect human health through scientific risk assessment, development of policies, monitoring and inspection, consultation, education, and enforcement of regulations designed to protect the food, water, and air supplies within our community.
The Air Quality Program actively responds to air quality complaints and issues Open Burning Permits in Weld County to protect public health and the natural environment. The Radon Mitigation Program also is housed in the Air Quality Program.
The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment investigates a number of zoonotic, or animal-related, diseases, including hantavirus, plague, rabies, tularemia, and West Nile virus, to prevent further spread and advise residents on how to protect themselves and their pets.
The Environmental Health Division biosolids permits and septage permits for beneficial use in Weld County. The division also is contracted by the state to conduct inspections of active biosolids application sites to verify compliance with state regulations.
The Food Safety Program is responsible for the licensure and inspection of all retail food establishments in the county. The Food Safety team also offers food safety education classes and investigates food-borne illness outbreaks.
Hazardous Waste Disposal
Weld County residents can dispose of household hazardous waste for free at one of two facilities operated by the county. The county also offers commercial hazardous waste disposal for Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQGs) in Weld County for a fee.
The focus of health inspection programs is the safe and healthy operation of child care centers, body art facilities, schools, and ambulance services. Regular inspections to ensure compliance with state and county regulations are a major part of the program. The programs also investigate complaints and provide informational resources to improve operation of facilities.

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment's laboratory supports community health by providing high-quality medical and water quality services in northern Colorado.
The Environmental Health Services Division has two major roles in Environmental Planning: reviewing proposed commercial and residential developments, and providing expertise and testifying at Weld County Planning Commission and Board of Weld County Commissioners land use hearings regarding public health issues of a proposed development.
Weld County offers private home inspections, as well as investigations involving children or adults with elevated blood lead levels. Weld County residents also can bring their ceramic goods and children’s toys to the health department for free analysis.
The OWTS Program consists of the permitting, site evaluation, design review, and inspection of onsite wastewater treatment systems with flows less than 2,000 gallons per day.
The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment interacts with compost and solid waste facilities through land use planning , site inspections, and complaint investigations.
