Highland Cheer Team honored by boardMonday, January 15, 2018, was proclaimed Highland Huskies Day by the Weld County Board of Commissioners in recognition of the cheer team winning its second consecutive state championship.

“Congratulations! That’s a huge accomplishment,” Weld County Commissioner and former Highland graduate Mike Freeman said at Monday’s board meeting. “It takes a lot of teamwork and hard work to do what you’ve done. We’re very proud of what you’ve accomplished and you should be as well.”

Recognition by the board included a proclamation reading by Weld County Commissioner Pro-Tem Barbara Kirkmeyer and a performance by the cheer team.

The Huskies competed December 8 and 9 at the Denver Coliseum in the 2A Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) state championships. Of the 14 teams in attendance, Highland earned a 78.1 score, earning them first place ahead of Cheyenne Wells, Hotchkiss, and Dove Creek and securing a state championship for the second year in a row.

Highland coach Michaela Runnells and team captain Makaela Kuhlman spoke on behalf of the cheer team. Proud of their team’s efforts and the work that went in to win another state title, they each thanked the board for recognizing Highland’s accomplishments. Both mentioned the desire to reach the team’s next goal: Competing in the USA National Spirit Competition in Anaheim, California February 22 through the 27. The Huskies are working to raise the $21,000 dollars needed to travel to the event. Competing at the event would mark a historical moment for Highland, as the cheer team would be the first athletics team in school history to compete in a national competition.

“Thank you for sharing your victory and your championship with us. And thank you for being leaders in our community and representing Weld County so well,” Kirkmeyer said.” “We know you’ll do great at nationals.”

The team is fundraising for the trip through Anyone wanting to help send the Huskies to nationals can do so by donating. The donation page can be found by visiting the “Highland Cheerleading Team” Facebook page, or by visiting and searching, “Huskies to Nationals.”
