The Weld County Board of Commissioners had a chance recently to recognize awards presented to the Weld County Fair and to the Weld County Fair Coordinator, Janet Konkel, at the Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs (RMAF) Annual Convention on November 9-12, 2016. Weld County received a total of five awards, including two first place prizes and one Fair Manager of the Year Award, accepted by Konkel.
Janet Konkel, who began work with the Weld County Fair in 2011, was nominated by peers and selected by the RMAF Board of Directors to receive this award for the 2016 year.
Konkel’s work to develop new relationships with businesses and organizations, to generate sponsorship funds, and to increase community participation and visibility all contributed to her winning of the award. In addition, Konkel’s implementation of new activities including horse-drawn carriage rides, a free community BBQ, Fiddle Fest, and Senior Day, resulted in 43,000 Weld County Fair visitors in 2016, which was also taken into consideration by the RMAF Board.
"Janet has done amazing things for the Weld County Fair, and this award is long past due," said Commissioner Chair Julie Cozad. "The Fair is an incredible event, and that is thanks largely to Janet’s hard work."
This convention, hosted in Spokane, WA, was attended by fair representatives from nine western states and two Canadian Provinces (425 fairs were represented in total), and also included a contest for fair materials called the Summit Awards Program. Within this program, fairs can enter their posters, pictures, fair books, and other promotional items for judging. Weld County had four entries in this contest, all of which placed in the top three of their entry category: The Weld County Fair 2016 Promotional Poster received a first place finish, the Weld County Fair book received third place, a Weld County Fair Photo received first place, and a Weld County Fair Photo (of an animal or person) received third place.
