Thirty-nine. That is how many years the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to Weld County for its annual comprehensive financial report. The 39th award, formally presented by the commissioners this week, was for the fiscal year that ended December 31, 2019.

“This is the 39th time Weld County’s accounting team has won this prestigious award,” Commissioner Chair Steve Moreno said. “The Accounting Department has excellent staff, and the work you do on behalf of the county is top-notch. We appreciate you and your work to keep this tradition of achievement going.”

The Certificate of Achievement, which was established in 1945, is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government organization. It encourages state and local governments to exceed the baseline financial reporting standards and prepare comprehensive reports that encourage full disclosure.

To be eligible for the certificate, the accounting department must work diligently, ensuring Weld County’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report is completed on time and meets the standards of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The county’s annual report includes results of county financial transactions which the accounting department puts together in a clear and accurate manner.  The GASB sets all the standards the report must meet, including specific financial information to be included, and how the design of the report should look. The standards can change year to year, so the accounting department must work hard to ensure that the annual report continually meets requirements.

“We’re always so pleased to accept this recognition from the commissioners,” Weld County Controller Barbara Connolly said. “In all of my time at Weld County, this is something I’ve been very proud to achieve year after year. Without the support of the commissioners to have controls in place, we would not be here each and every year to accept this award. Thank you.”
