County, Municipal and State Permitting

The OGED is responsible for permitting, regulating and enforcing surface regulations related to oil and gas operations for drilling sites located in unincorporated Weld County. With the goal of serving residents and the energy industry, the OGED is where to file and get more information about 1041 Weld County Oil and Gas Location (WOGLA) permits, Location Assessment for Pipeline (LAP) permits and more. 

Incorporated municipalities may require land use permitting of oil & gas operations and have site specific or jurisdiction specific requirements. Questions or complaints related to current or planned oil & gas operations within municipalities should be directed to the operator or municipalities.

The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission or COGCC permits oil & gas locations. An Oil and Gas Location Assessment (Form 2A) is one of two permits an operator must obtain prior to drilling a well. The Form 2A permit review is focused on the surface impacts of a proposed location, whereas the Application for Permit-to-Drill (Form 2) addresses “down-hole” or subsurface issues. These processes involve a notice to nearby homeowners and a public comment process. Pending and recently approved permits are posted on the Colorado Oil & Gas Commission.
