Zoonotic Disease Seasonal Updates

Updates will be provided during the months of highest zoonotic incidence (typically June-September).

Rabies

Rabies has been found in bats, skunks, and a few other species in Weld County. People and pets that have contact or suspected contact with a rabid animal should be assessed for risk of rabies and possible treatment.

As of 8/3/2022, there have been four skunks and one bat that have tested positive for rabies in Weld County in 2022.

West Nile Virus

Mosquitoes are trapped in three zones in Weld County during the West Nile Virus (WNV) season (approximately June - September). See a map of these Sentinel Zones(PDF, 3MB).

Positive Mosquito Pools for 2022:

Week of 6/27/22 - one in Zone 3
Week of 7/4/22 - one in Zone 2
Week of 7/11/22 - four in Zone 3
Week of 7/18/22 - four in Zone 2; three in Zone 3
Week of 7/25/22 - one in Zone 2; three in Zone 3
Week of 8/1/22 - three in Zone 1

Human Cases: No current cases reported.

Mosquito counts are now currently above average, for this time of year, and after a brief dip at the end of July, Culex mosquitoes (WNV vector mosquitoes) are again above average.

Prevention practices are recommended!

Use insect repellant.
Wear long sleeves and pants to reduce mosquito bites.
Drain standing water near your home to prevent mosquito breeding.
Use screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Plague

There are no current cases of plague reported or diagnosed in Weld County for 2022.

Prevention: Avoid contact with sick wildlife, protect yourself and your pets from fleas and ticks, and keep pets current on a veterinarian-approved flea and tick treatment.

Tularemia

There are no current cases of Tularemia reported or diagnosed in Weld County for 2022.

Prevention: Use insect repellent, wear gloves when handling sick or dead animals, and avoid mowing over dead animals.

Hantavirus

There are no current cases of Hantavirus reported or diagnosed in Weld County for 2022.

Prevention: Avoid exposure to mouse droppings and mouse-infested areas.
