Responsibilities of the Clerk
The Weld County Clerk and Recorder has the responsibility for the following departments in county government: Recording Department, Election Department, Motor Vehicle Department, the Southeast Weld Branch Office, and the Southwest Weld Branch Office.
Responsibilities of the Recording Department
The recording department is responsible for processing and preserving documents presented for recording as public record. Permanent record is kept on microfilm and optical images. Some records date back to 1865. All records are open to the public and certified copies of any document of record are available for a fee. Included in the records are: real estate records, military discharges, school records (limited information), maps and plats, and marriage licenses.
Responsibilities of the Elections Department
The election department is responsible for voter registration: compilation of ballots, absentee ballots, and early voting ballots for the regular primary, general and special county elections; training of election judges; conduct of election day procedures; tabulation of election day results, and certification of the election with the County Canvass Board.
Registration as a voter may be made at either office of the Weld County Clerk and Recorder or at any municipal clerk's office of cities and towns in Weld County, or at any driver's license office. Forms to register by mail are also available at these locations.
Responsibilities of the Motor Vehicle Department
The Clerk and Recorder acts as an agent for the State of Colorado, Department of Revenue in titling and licensing all motor vehicles purchased, leased or entering the state.
All motor vehicle titles and registration requirements are set by state statute or set by rule and regulation promulgated by the Department of Revenue.
Southeast/Southwest Weld County Services
Services of the office that are available at the Southeast Weld County Services Building and the Southwest Weld County Branch Office include marriage licenses, motor vehicle registration, and voter registration.
The first Clerk and Recorder for Weld County, WM C Sanders, was elected October 21st, 1877. Steve Moreno is the 28th Clerk and Recorder, elected on November 5th, 2002 and re-elected November 7th, 2006.
